A typical single split system for a flat or a room is surveyed, quoted and installed in one visit, with the indoor unit wall-mounted, the outdoor unit sited on an external wall, balcony or roof, and the pipework, drain and electrics run between them by an F-Gas certified engineer.
The survey decides the outcome: where the outdoor unit can legally and practically go, whether the wall can take the pipe run, how the condensate will drain, and whether the electrical supply needs an additional circuit (which our NICEIC certified electricians do on the same job). Multi-split systems serve several rooms from one outdoor unit and suit flats and houses with no space for more than one condenser. VRF and VRV systems are the commercial option for offices, hotels and apartment blocks where dozens of indoor units share a refrigerant network. Do I Need Planning Permission for Air Conditioning in London?
For most houses an outdoor unit falls under permitted development provided it meets size and position limits, but flats, leasehold properties, listed buildings and conservation areas usually need the freeholder's consent and often the council's, so check before you book an installer.
The permitted development rules for houses require the outdoor unit to be under 0.6 cubic metres, at least one metre from the boundary, not on a wall facing a highway in a conservation area, and not on a pitched roof. Flats have no permitted development rights for external equipment, so a leaseholder needs a licence for alterations from the freeholder or managing agent, and many London boroughs treat an outdoor unit on a flat as needing full planning consent.
